9 Tips for Attention in the Maintenance of Dental Handpiece

Table of Contents

A dental handpiece is an important tool for dentists to use every day. It is a precise instrument, so the price is not as low as ordinary dental tools.
Careful maintenance and maintenance of the dental handpiece is necessary. We know that correct operation is significant. But it is a pity that most of the issues are still caused by improper maintenances and operation. We hope these 9 tips of maintenance can give you more help and avoid some unnecessary losses.

1. The Correct Range of Air Pressure and Speed

Many dentists know so much about the dental handpiece to ignore to read the instruction manual. But sometimes they will forget to adjust the correct air pressure.
Higher air pressure will speed up the abrasion of the bearing, which is one of the most frequent issues.

The standard air pressure of a high-speed dental handpiece:
Standard head: 0.20-0.25Mpa.
Torque head: 0.25-0.30Mpa.

2. Clean Air and Water Supply

Please make sure that your air compressor is a medical oil-free air compressor.
Please make your dental chair equipped with a water & air filter and ensure that the air supply is clean and dry. The blocked pipes of the dental handpiece and chair will cause the bearings to wear out fast, which can reduce the turbine’s torque and even cause cross-infection.

3. Cleaning

Please clean the handpiece shell with a soft brush and alcohol or warm water.
Do not put the dental handpiece in the ultrasonic cleaning machine.
Do not put the handpiece in any chemical liquid.
When the handpiece soaks in chemicals, a large number of crystals will be produced inside after drying. If the bearing of the turbine runs at high speed under such circumstances, it will speed up its damage.

4. Internal Lubrication

Add enough good lubricating oil to your handpiece, the oil should be inserted directly into the airline until it is emitted from the head of the handpiece, which can ensure that the internal bearings are properly lubricated.

 5. Remove Excess Oil

Insert a dental bur and connect the handpiece to the tubing and then run the handpiece for about 10 seconds to drain the excess oil. This way could avoid spraying too much lubricant on your dental handpiece and distribute the lubricating oil in the bearings and chucks.

Water Spray

6. Sterilization

Wipe external of the handpiece, and put it in a sterilization pouch to disinfect according to the manufacturer’s requirements.
When putting the handpiece into the sterilizer, keep the end part away from the steam inlet. The too high temperature will make the tail rubber ring deformation or aging.
If the sterilizer has a drying cycle, please let the handpiece go through the drying cycle to ensure the handpiece is dry. The handpiece needs to cool completely before you use it again.

7. Prepare two or three handpieces

We should prepare two or three dental handpieces during a treatment to reduce the time spent using a single handpiece at a time.
General high-speed dental handpiece speed is 300,000 to 500,000rmp, which will wear out the bearings once the time is too long.

8. Good Usage Habit

Please use the point-cutting operation when operating a high-speed handpiece, do not use too much force to cause bearing damage, and hurt the tooth. If the speed of grinding tooth is decreasing, or the rotational speed is abnormal, please change the dental bur in time.

Correct Coperation Of Dental Handpiece

9. Choose the Proper Dental Bur

The dental burs of the handpiece will have different requirements when with different functions, characteristics, and rotational speeds.
Do not use bent, worn, or too long or too short burs. The handpiece can not rotate without the dental burs, which will cause wear and tear on the bearing.

Dental Drill

This 9-step maintenance process usually applies to all types of dental handpieces. Review the user manual could help you a lot and avoid the unnecessary steps.
